Filee video conversion: codecs, smaller files and frames
Choose video codecs, hardware encoding and frame extraction in Filee. Understand MP4 compatibility, HDR frame limits and why conversion may not reduce size.

Decide between a playable video and pictures
Filee's video routes require FFmpeg. Choose a video target when you need a playable movie, an audio target when you want its sound, and an extraction preset when you want individual frames. An MP4 extension alone does not tell you whether a player supports the video codec inside it.
Version 1.12.0 adds hardware encoding and every-frame extraction. These are different operations: hardware encoding makes a new video, while frame extraction creates a folder of pictures. The release notes describe the features and limits; the wiki has not benchmarked your graphics chip.
Choose a compatibility-first video preset
For a MOV that will not play on the receiving device, start with the offered normal MP4 preset and test the result there. Filee also offers HEVC and AV1 choices for appropriate containers. These codecs can be useful, but an older device or editor may not support them.
In Settings, Presets, inspect the target, codec, quality and maximum height. Convert a short, representative source before a long recording. If the receiving application publishes codec requirements, use those rather than choosing solely by filename.
| Your priority | Setting to inspect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Playback on a specific device | Target container and video codec | A supported extension may still contain an unsupported codec |
| Smaller output | Quality and maximum height | Less detail or resolution; no fixed size guarantee |
| Faster H.264/HEVC encoding | Hardware acceleration | Depends on the chip; output can be larger at similar quality |
| No sound | Remove audio in the preset | Removes the audio track deliberately |
| Sound only | Audio output such as MP3 | Produces an audio file rather than a silent video |
Reduce size without guessing at megabytes
Keep the original recording. Start with a smaller maximum height if your destination does not need the source resolution, and a quality choice appropriate to the picture. Check a section with movement and small text: a static opening title is a weak quality sample for a busy video.
A source already using an efficient codec may not shrink with your chosen settings. The engine reference also documents eligible stream-copy paths when an existing stream can be kept. Rewrapping a compatible stream changes its container without the same size change as re-encoding. Completion is not a promise of compression.
Do not repeatedly transcode the last compressed copy while searching for a setting. Produce each comparison from the original, open it in the intended player and compare duration, picture, audio synchronization and bytes.
Use hardware encoding when it fits
In a video preset, Use hardware acceleration (graphics chip) is off by default. The documented hardware paths apply to H.264 and HEVC, not every video codec or a simple stream copy. Filee probes usable encoders and falls back to software when appropriate.
The release describes a speed and power benefit with a possible size trade-off; it does not provide a universal speed multiplier. If you need predictable archival size or appearance, compare your actual material. A missing compatible chip does not make the ordinary software route unavailable.
Extract one picture or every frame
A normal video-to-PNG route produces a still frame. In 1.12.0, choose Extract frames (PNG) or Extract frames (JPG), or enable Save every frame of a video in an appropriate preset, for a sequence. Add the extraction preset in Settings, Toolbar if it is not on your donut.
The frame-sequence option supports Every Nth frame, from 1 to 1000. The resulting files are numbered in a folder such as clip_frames. For a variable-frame-rate phone recording, the sequence follows decoded frames rather than inventing a fixed-rate timeline.
Before starting, check free disk space. Filee refuses an estimated output above 100,000 pictures or one expected to exceed the output drive's free space when duration and rate are available. An unknown duration can limit that preflight check, so you should still choose a sensible interval.
Inspect extracted frames carefully
The engine reference says HDR frames are not tone-mapped, so PQ or HLG sources can produce flat-looking pictures. The sequence path also does not apply the ordinary image resizing, rotation and metadata options as a later image-editing pass, although phone orientation is handled by the video path.
Count a small sample, inspect portrait orientation and open a frame with highlights and shadows. If you need an accurate HDR-to-SDR delivery, use a workflow that explicitly handles that transformation. Do not label flat frames as a verified color-correct export.
For a missing engine, see formats and engines. For sound, tags and album artwork, continue to audio conversion.
