Filee PDF conversion: editable text, slides and size

Choose between editable text, page images and a smaller PDF. They solve different problems.

Choose the result before choosing the format

Filee 1.12.0 can turn PDF pages into pictures on PowerPoint slides and compress a PDF while keeping it a PDF. It also has PDF-to-DOCX and text routes. These outputs have different purposes: a slide that looks like a page is not the same as editable page elements.

Your goal Route to consider Check afterward
Present pages as they look PDF to PPTX Slide count, page size, image clarity and notes
Reuse the text in Word PDF to DOCX Reading order, missing text, tables and styling
Extract plain text PDF to TXT Text exists in the source; order and characters
Attach a smaller PDF Compress PDF preset Actual file size and document features
Export page pictures PDF to PNG or JPG Selected pages, pixel size and legibility

Use a copy of the PDF and keep the source. This guide describes documented behavior; it does not claim these routes reproduce every PDF correctly.

PDF to PowerPoint: pages as pictures

In Filee 1.12.0, choose PPTX (slides) for a PDF. The release notes describe one slide per PDF page, sized to that page. Each slide contains a page picture, while the page text goes into the speaker notes.

Open the exported presentation and compare the slide count with the source. Inspect a dense page at presentation size and check that your presentation application shows the speaker notes as expected. Because the page is a picture, its separate words and shapes are not editable PowerPoint objects. If you need to rewrite text, consider DOCX and plan to rebuild the design.

This distinction answers the request behind issue #96, which the release notes link to the new slide workflow. A PDF with a complex layout can be a good candidate for a visual slide copy, but the result still needs a visual check.

PDF to Word: inspect the reading order

Choose DOCX when you need text you can edit. Filee's built-in document writer uses extracted document content; the engine reference describes PDF text in reading order and no OCR for the PDF text route.

A user in issue #138 requests layout-aware PDF-to-DOCX conversion after reporting collapsed tables and lost styling. That report is evidence of a limitation to inspect, not a promise that every PDF fails. Check a two-column page, a table and a page with equations before converting the rest of a collection.

A scanned PDF can contain only page images. If you cannot select its words in a PDF viewer, do not expect plain text extraction to recognize the scan. Use an OCR workflow suited to the document before expecting editable text; this wiki does not offer an OCR service.

Make the PDF smaller

Choose the Compress PDF preset, or the compression option on a PDF-to-PDF preset. Version 1.12.0 documents three image-resolution choices: Smallest at 72 dpi, Balanced at 150 dpi and High quality at 300 dpi. Pictures larger than needed can be downscaled and photos recompressed as JPEG, while other content is compressed losslessly.

Start with a copy and compare the resulting bytes with the original. Check fine print, diagrams and any page containing small embedded text inside an image. The lower-resolution preset trades image detail for size. The release notes say text, fonts, links, bookmarks and forms are retained; verify the features your document actually uses in the exported file.

An already compact PDF may not become smaller. The documented behavior keeps it unchanged and reports that outcome. With Ghostscript installed, the optional Also try Ghostscript setting tries that route and keeps the smaller result. A lack of size reduction alone does not mean Filee stopped responding.

When a conversion finishes but looks wrong

Keep the original and note the exact input, target, preset and Filee version. A successful export is not evidence of faithful layout. Issue #144 reports layout and image problems in PDF-to-Markdown output; issue #143 concerns equations in a Word-to-PDF conversion.

Use those reports to decide what to inspect, rather than applying an unverified universal fix. The troubleshooting guide explains how to isolate the file, route and engine, and how to share a safe reproduction with the official project.

A scanned page can look intact without editable words

The PDF reader documents two distinct cases. A scan with an existing invisible OCR layer can contribute that text to extraction. A page without text can be carried as a rendered page picture in document output, but Filee does not recognize its words with OCR. An exported DOCX containing a page image is not the same as an editable transcription.

Try selecting words in the source PDF and then in the exported file. For a mixed document, inspect both a born-digital page and a scanned page. Do not judge a 50-page document solely from its selectable cover. If OCR is required, use an authorized OCR workflow before judging Filee's text-based route.

What a Reddit PDF-to-Word repair actually fixed

A user in the launch thread offered a public PDF after finding errors in a 1.5.2 DOCX export. The developer described a 1.6.0 improvement for schedule rows and addresses, while explicitly saying that table cells still became reading-order text rather than real Word tables.

The success reply concerns that sample; it does not establish general layout reconstruction. The 1.12.0 engine reference still lists tables, vector drawings on text pages, form fields and non-link annotations as limitations of the editable PDF reader. For a form that must look the same, compare a rendered PDF or page-image slide; for a document you must edit, budget for reconstruction.

Make a useful one-page acceptance sample

Choose a page with the feature you need: a two-column article, table, equation or scan. Compare the order of text, editable objects and visual appearance separately. In a slide deck, test speaker notes as well as the page picture. In a compressed PDF, test links and form fields as well as size.

For equations in a source Word document, go to Office conversion checks. For a batch of independent scans, use output folder rules so individual failures and results remain traceable.
