Filee Office conversion: formulas, fonts and layout limits

Convert Office documents with Filee while checking spreadsheet formulas, fonts, equations and macros. Learn which details survive and when to keep the original.

A readable file is not always a working document

Filee can convert modern Office files without Microsoft Office. But a PDF is a visual delivery format, a spreadsheet may need working formulas, and a DOCX may need editable structure. Decide which result you need before converting.

The spreadsheet limitation to check first is in the engine documentation: the built-in spreadsheet converter keeps cached formula results, not the formulas themselves. Correct-looking numbers do not prove that a converted workbook can keep calculating.

Check a spreadsheet by changing an input

An X user report from October 14 describes Filee 1.10.3 on Mac converting XLSX to ODS: the displayed total remained, while its formula did not. That is a user-reported test, not this wiki's test. The 1.12.0 engine reference independently documents the same cached-results limitation.

For an illustrative check, use a workbook with quantity 2, unit price 25 and a total formula =B2*C2. In the converted copy, change the price and see whether the total recalculates. A static 50.00 can look correct initially and still be unsuitable for continued accounting. This example is a suggested check, not a conversion recorded by this wiki.

Keep the original workbook for live calculations. For further spreadsheet editing, use a spreadsheet application and verify its import/export path. Do not delete a formula-bearing source just because an ODS or XLSX export opens without an error.

Understand what the built-in spreadsheet route omits

Feature Documented behavior Your acceptance check
Cell values and number formats Supported within the reader/writer's listed limits Dates, percentages, currencies and leading-zero identifiers
Multiple sheets to CSV/TSV One output per sheet That every required sheet exists and separators are correct
Formulas Cached results kept; formulas not converted Change an input and inspect the formula bar
Charts and pictures Not converted by the built-in spreadsheet route Inspect any report that depends on a chart
Validation, conditional formatting and print setup Not retained as a complete workbook feature set Recheck business rules and print layout

A CSV is a data table, not a workbook with formulas, styling and many sheets. If an identifier such as 00125 matters, open the output in a way that lets you inspect its actual data type and text. A receiving app's automatic formatting can hide the distinction.

Convert Word, Excel or PowerPoint to PDF

  1. Start with a copy of the source and identify a representative page or sheet.
  2. Drop it into Filee and choose PDF. Modern DOCX, XLSX and PPTX have built-in routes using Filee's document readers and bundled renderer; installing Microsoft Office is not required.
  3. Review any preset choices that affect page size, output naming or resolution.
  4. Open the PDF beside the original in the application that will be used to read it.
  5. Check page count, text, symbols, tables, images and the parts a recipient will rely on.

Older DOC, PPT, RTF and additional routes may need LibreOffice. Installing an optional engine does not guarantee that it becomes the route used for every modern Office file; built-in routes have their own priority. See formats and engines before diagnosing an engine problem.

Inspect equations and special fonts

Issue #143 reports incorrect equation rendering during Word-to-PDF conversion. A DOCX that visually depends on mathematical notation needs a page-by-page comparison of formulas, symbols and alignment. This open report identifies a risk to check, not a verified universal fix.

Likewise, keep the original when exact font metrics or a complex layout matters. An exported page can have all its words while changing line wraps, table breaks or symbol appearance. If the actual requirement is a submission-ready PDF, inspect that final PDF, rather than assuming an editable intermediate is equivalent.

Issue #141 concerns a Tencent Docs DOCX failing to load in a reported LibreOffice route. Do not apply that report to every DOCX. A small file exported again from its originating editor can help distinguish a file-specific problem, but preserve the failing copy for a permitted reproduction.

Macros and templates need a separate decision

The Office Open XML routes support macro-enabled and template variants, but conversion to a macro-free type removes macros. A DOCM-to-DOCX or XLSM-to-XLSX copy should not be treated as a functioning replacement for a macro-driven workflow.

For visual delivery, compare the PDF. For editable prose, inspect the DOCX. For live spreadsheet work, retain and test the workbook. If you instead start from a PDF, read the PDF guide: converting that rendered document back to Word does not recover the original Office structure.
