Filee audio conversion: MP3, WAV, Opus and album art
Convert audio or extract a video soundtrack with Filee. Choose bitrate, channels and WAV settings, preserve album art and check the output in your player.

Choose an audio result for your listener
Filee uses optional FFmpeg for audio conversion and extracting sound from video. Choose MP3 when the receiving player needs it, WAV when a tool specifically asks for PCM audio, or another supported target for your actual purpose. Converting an already lossy file to a lossless format does not reconstruct missing sound.
Before choosing a preset, check duration, channel layout, sample rate, codec and tags. Each can affect whether the result fits. Keep the source and try one representative file before a music library or recording archive.
Extract sound from a video
- Confirm FFmpeg is available in Settings, Engines.
- Drop a video that contains an audio track into Filee.
- Select an offered audio output, such as MP3, and inspect the preset.
- Choose the bitrate or channel setting you need, then convert to a separate folder.
- Play the beginning, a middle section and the end in the intended player.
The documented route converts the first audio stream. A multilingual recording may therefore need more deliberate track selection in a dedicated media tool if you require a different stream. Do not infer the language from the output extension. A video with no audio cannot yield a useful soundtrack simply by selecting MP3.
Set bitrate and channels deliberately
| Setting | Use it for | Check afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Audio bitrate | Balancing a lossy target's size and quality | Speech clarity, music artifacts and bytes |
| Mono / stereo | A destination that requires a specific channel layout | That mixing down did not lose something important |
| WAV sample rate | A recorder, editor or service requiring a particular rate | The exported file's properties in that tool |
| WAV bit depth | A specific PCM requirement | That the receiving program accepts it |
| M4A with ALAC | A supported lossless-codec destination | Player support for ALAC inside M4A |
The engine reference documents these controls and format-specific restrictions. The GUI's audio bitrate controls are not the same as the CLI's image --quality option. Use a saved preset with --preset when you need the app's audio settings in a script; do not invent a bitrate flag.
A very low bitrate may be adequate for a particular voice recording and poor for music. There is no single setting that guarantees an intelligible, small result for every source. Inspect the part of your recording with background noise, overlapping voices or dense music.
Why did an Opus file lose its album cover?
In the Reddit discussion, a user reported missing Opus cover art in 1.5.1 and described an extra tagging step with opustags. The developer's 1.5.2 release addresses artwork in Opus/Ogg and MKA.
Check your version before adding the manual repair step from that early thread. Current documentation describes those formats' cover handling, while other audio targets have their own metadata capabilities.
Open the exported file in the player you actually use. Check title, artist, album and artwork separately from playback. Some players cache a previous image or expose different metadata; a single thumbnail is not a complete tag inspection. If a current Filee output still lacks art, record the exact source/target pair and use a public or synthetic sample for a report.
Keep the source as the audio master
An MP3-to-WAV conversion changes the representation; it cannot undo MP3 compression. Changing stereo to mono can reduce channels; converting it back does not recover the original separation. A higher sample rate does not by itself create additional source detail.
For a batch, save outputs separately and spot-check the longest track, a file with artwork and a file with non-English tags. The output guide explains where results land and how collision handling avoids accidental replacement. For scheduled work, read batches and JSON results before treating a partly failed batch as complete.
