Filee troubleshooting: missing menus and failed files
First separate a shortcut problem from an unreadable file, a missing engine or an unsuitable output format.

Test the drop zone with a simple file
Open Filee and try a copy of a small JPG or PNG through the Home drop zone. If that works while a global drag fails, investigate the gesture or desktop integration. If one file fails while another of the same type succeeds, focus on the input and conversion route.
Keep the original and record the Filee version from Settings, About. Release 1.12.0 fixes specific older problems, but updating is not evidence that an unrelated problem is solved. Read the official release notes before assuming a symptom has a matching fix.
The circular menu will not open
On Windows, check whether Filee is running as administrator while Explorer runs normally. The 1.12.0 notes explain that Explorer cannot drop onto an elevated Filee or use its menu. The updated app can identify that situation and offer Restart without administrator rights. Use that normal-user route rather than elevating the file manager to match.
Check the configured gesture and test inside Filee. The project has reports about shortcuts on macOS, including issue #135. That report does not establish a universal workaround. On Linux, global gestures require X11; on Wayland, use the drop zone or file manager's right-click menu.
Version 1.12.0 extends the file-managers-and-desktop gesture setting beyond Explorer to several other managers and fixes a retry-gestures problem. Confirm the current setting and release before reinstalling components.
A target is missing or says it needs an engine
Open Settings, Engines and check the relevant component. Video and audio need FFmpeg. Older office, markup, PostScript and rare e-book routes may need LibreOffice, Pandoc, Ghostscript or calibre. The engine reference maps these dependencies.
Filee can find supported existing engines on the computer, and some downloads differ by platform. Check the displayed status instead of assuming a download button exists on every operating system. Install while online before testing the offline workflow.
If the extension itself is unsupported, check the official format list. Version 1.12.0 adds a Request this format action for certain failures; the notes say it sends the extension to a GitHub form, rather than the filename. Encrypted and DRM-protected inputs cannot be converted just by requesting their extension.
A PDF exports but its content looks wrong
PDF-to-PPTX makes each page a picture. PDF-to-DOCX is an editable-text route with layout limits. Text extraction is not OCR. Use the PDF decision guide to choose the right result.
User reports cover layout loss in PDF-to-DOCX (#138), layout and missing images in PDF-to-Markdown (#144), and equation rendering in Word-to-PDF (#143). These reports identify things to check; they do not prove your file has the same cause or that a suggested fix works for it.
Compare a short page containing the problem with the source. For critical content, count tables, inspect equations and verify values manually before sharing the export.
A long e-book stops near 95 percent
The 1.12.0 notes address issue #127: long e-book exports could hit a two-minute timeout. The updated route grows the time limit with the text, up to an hour. The release also describes a calibre PDF route that can be faster for long books when calibre is installed and prioritized above the HWPX writer in Settings, Engines.
Check the version and engine order first. A different book may still have its own input problem. Preserve a minimal sample when permitted and avoid publishing a copyrighted book as an issue attachment.
An SVG fails to become an image
Release 1.12.0 fixes certain SVG files with unescaped ampersands or HTML entities, linked to issue #120. If the same symptom appears on an older version, compare after updating from the official release. If it remains, report the current version and a safe sample instead of assuming every SVG failure has that cause.
Prepare a report someone can reproduce
Use the official repository's issue form. Include the Filee version, operating system and desktop session where relevant, source and target formats, chosen preset, engine status, observed behavior and a short reproduction. Report what happened without claiming a cause you have not isolated.
Share only files you have permission to publish. Inspect screenshots and log excerpts for personal filenames, paths, document contents or other private information. A synthetic file that reproduces the problem is preferable to a private work document. For an error in this wiki, use our contact page; application bugs belong with the Filee project.
Match an old community workaround to its release
| Symptom described in a community thread | Version context | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| Animated GIF to WebP becomes a still | Developer fix in 1.2.2 | Check the current version and use an animated target |
| Removing EXIF changes a photo's colors | Separate profile control described in 1.2.3 | Inspect EXIF and color-profile settings separately |
| Converted photos lose original file dates | Per-preset option, then global setting in 1.4.0 | Set the needed date policy and inspect a sample |
| Opus export loses album art | Developer fix in 1.5.2 | Check current output before using an old tagging workaround |
| EPS to PNG has a white background | Developer fix in 1.6.0 | Use PNG and inspect alpha; JPG still cannot be transparent |
These items come from the Reddit launch thread and linked official releases. They are not a claim that all related problems are fixed. Current reports such as #139, about changed colors in transparent PNG output, should be investigated with their own input and settings.
For a focused answer, use photo metadata, animated images or audio tags. Do not apply a historical fix to a different source format merely because its symptom sounds similar.
A completed spreadsheet no longer recalculates
The built-in spreadsheet route keeps cached values rather than formulas. This is a documented preservation limit, not evidence that the download failed. Keep the original workbook and follow the formula acceptance check. A visually correct total is insufficient if someone will change prices or quantities later.
